Vinyl Institute Announces Recipients of Sixth Round of VIABILITY Recycling Grant Funding

By | June 2025

Washington, DC, June 10, 2025 – The Vinyl Institute (VI), a U.S. trade association representing the leading manufacturers of vinyl, today announced its sixth round of funding to five organizations totaling nearly $557,000 through its VIABILITY™ recycling grant program. This brings the total dollar amount committed to approximately $2.7 million – all thanks to generous contributions from four PVC resin producers (Formosa, Oxy, Shintech, and Westlake).

“We are proud to announce yet another great group of recycling grants,” said Ned Monroe, president and CEO of the Vinyl Institute. “We have organizations returning to build off the successes of their past grants, as well as exciting new projects, all pushing towards our collective goal of increasing the amount of post-consumer PVC we recycle every year.”

The five VIABILTY grant recipients include:

  • Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) (Schaumberg, IL): FGIA, a trade association representing window and door manufacturers, has been awarded a second grant to run a pilot program to recycle post-consumer vinyl windows targeted to three locations in the Midwest. The first grant awarded to FGIA in November of 2023 provided funding to prepare this pilot program through a comprehensive market study.

  • Chemical Fabrics and Film Association (CFFA) (Cleveland, OH): The CFFA has been awarded their third grant to build off the positive momentum of their post-consumer PVC roof recycling efforts. CFFA will look to solidify solution partners and expand their outreach to find new sources of roof membrane. The vinyl roofing industry recycled 2.9 million pounds of post-consumer vinyl roofing membrane in 2024, a 77% increase over 2023.

  • Ocean Plastics Recovery Project (Kodiak, AK): The Oceans Plastics Recovery Project has been awarded their first grant to assist with characterization of ocean-recovered and end-of-life flexible PVC buoys.

  • Consortium for Waste Circularity (CWC)/University of Florida (Gainesville, FL): CWC and the University of Florida have been awarded their second grant to continue their development of regenerative robust gasification process for mixed waste including PVC.

  • Plastic Back (Hebron, OH): Plastic Back has been awarded a grant to aid in the development of an advanced recycling pilot unit in the U.S. using low temperature chemical depolymerization to dechlorinate PVC and produce high value byproducts.

Applications for the seventh round of VIABILITY are due September 12, 2025. For more information on VIABILITY, visit https://www.vinylinfo.org/recycling/
