Vinyl Institute Awards $75,000 Recycling Grant to Coated Fabrics and Film Association to Advance Vinyl Recycling

By | July 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 16, 2026 — The Vinyl Institute (VI) has awarded a $75,000 recycling grant to the Coated Fabrics and Film Association (CFFA) to support efforts to expand and advance vinyl (PVC) recycling infrastructure and end markets. The VI has supported the CFFA in the past, and this grant demonstrates the VI’s continued support, in addition to the over $3 million in grants awarded to various other organizations by the VI since 2023.

The funding will support CFFA-led initiatives focused on improving the collection, processing, and recycling of PVC roofing membrane, including targeted pilot activities and coordination across the value chain.

“This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening vinyl recycling systems and supporting innovative approaches to material recovery,” said [Jay Thomas]. “Partnering with organizations like CFFA helps accelerate scalable solutions that can increase recycling rates and support long-term sustainability goals.”

Driving Innovation in Vinyl Recycling

Vinyl-coated fabrics and film products, used in applications such as roofing membranes, present unique recycling challenges due to their composition and end-use conditions.

Through this grant, CFFA will work to address these challenges by coordinating recycling efforts, supporting pilot projects, and facilitating collaboration between manufacturers, contractors, and recycling partners.

“CFFA is committed to advancing practical solutions for recycling PVC roof membranes,” said Jennifer Oblock, Executive Director of CFFA. “This support from the Vinyl Institute allows us to expand our work with industry partners and demonstrate viable pathways for recovering and recycling these materials.”

Project Scope and Activities

Over the one-year grant term, the project will include:

  • Dedicated recycling coordination to support program implementation
  • Expanded recycling efforts, including contractor-supported material recovery projects
  • Trial runs with equipment manufacturers to validate recycling processes
  • Transportation and logistics support for moving recovered materials to recyclers
  • Evaluation of results to support future scaling and replication

Planned activities include roof tear-off recovery pilots, processing trials, and transportation of recovered materials to recycling partners, helping to test real-world recycling pathways.

Building Scalable Recycling Pathways

The initiative is designed to establish practical, repeatable models for PVC roof membranes, particularly in construction and industrial sectors where recovery has historically been limited.

By combining pilot demonstrations with industry coordination, the project will generate data and best practices to inform future investments and expand recycling capacity over time.

“This work is about scaling an already successful roof recycling program,” Jay Thomas added. “By supporting customer education and partnerships, we can build momentum that delivers measurable increases in recycling.”
