USTR Releases EU Trade Negotiation Priorities

By | January 2019

The Office of the United State Trade Representative (USTR) has released a summary of negotiating objectives as the Trump Administration seeks to negotiate a new trade agreement with the European Union.  The summary outlines multiple objectives including intellectual property protections, rules of origin, labor relations, and technical barriers to trade.  However, the overall objective is to improve the US trade balance and reduce the trade deficit with the EU.

Next steps: USTR is required to publish on its website a detailed summary of specific negotiating objectives at least 30 days before initiating negotiations with a trading partner. As such, the earliest estimated date for the launch of the talks would be February 11.
